Nintendo is 121 years young today

Nintendo, huh? OLD. Today the venerable gaming company, which has defined so many gamers’ lives—not to mention an entire industry—turned 121 years old.

Most people know this already, but I say it again: Back in the late 1800s, Nintendo was a card company. Since then, it’s created toys, taxi cabs and of course video games.

Happy birthday, Nintendo!

Completely unsurprising Wiimote with MotionPlus built in outed by GameStop

Wow! What a shock! GameStop, as they are wont to do with new products and kit, has inadvertently outed an all-in-one Wiimote/MotionPlus combo controller with their listing for the sure-fire sleeper hit of the holiday season, FlingSmash.

Looks like the new controller is going to be bundled in with this game (and probably many others) sometime in early November.

And, since it’s going to inevitably happen, I’ll cut it off right here: No, Nintendo shouldn’t have “had this packed in with the Wii back in 2006.” If you know anything about prices and technology and Nintendo’s low-cost, all inclusive, make-a-profit-from-day-one strategy, an all-inclusive Wiimote on day one back in 2006 would have priced the Wii out of the mainstream’s hands and cut into Nintendo’s profits. Lose-lose.

Unconfirmed: German paper touts November 11 3DS launch date

Is the Nintendo 3DS launching in Japan on November 11? Possibly yes, if a German tabloid with a track record for calling Nintendo rumors correctly is to be believed.

Case in point, according to Bild, which cites no source but nevertheless definitively lists a Japanese launch date, the 3DS is arriving in Nippon on November 11. No word was given on a U.S. or European launch date, save for “spring 2011.”

Dubious? Of course it is. But! November 11 has been floated before. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, as they say…

As much as I’d like to believe them, these release dates that are being tossed around are still rumours and unconfirmed by the Big N. I’ll wait until they officially announce a release date before getting really excited for it. None the less I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one of these devices when the time comes.

Well, it’s a month and a half away and it would seem to be too close from the time Nintendo will be announcing release and pricing info. Still, this would mean that a release over here could be in december but is likely to be moved until march.

Nintendo offering support for Metroid: Other M bug

September 27th, 2010 Posted in News, Wii, Written by Valay

Update: Nintendo of America is on board as well. Here’s their response:

“If you are experiencing this issue, we are able to resolve it by fixing your save data. For instructions on how to set up a repair by sending us your save file on an SD card, or for other options, please call 1-800-255-3700. Representatives are available from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (PST) seven days a week.”

A couple of weeks ago, we reported that a number of Metroid: Other M players were experiencing a game-breaking door glitch bug. At the time, it seemed as though Nintendo would not be coming up with a fix for the issue. While that still appears to be the case in North America, the company does have a plan for Japan.

Players who send in an SD card with their save files or the Wii itself to Nintendo’s service center in Uji will be able to overcome the bug. Nintendo will cost the cover of shipping, though it was stated in an official release that one week will be needed to fix the game. No downloadable patch has been announced, so consumers only have two options: send in the necessary save file or restart the game. We’ll let you know if Nintendo has similar plans for other territories.

One question you’ve gotta ask is why they’d make a new console. To get better graphics? This generation has proven that doesn’t matter and may even be a hindrance to making successful games. For better control? They’ve already done that once with the Motion Plus add-on. It’s possible the Wii is going to be the last box we see from Nintendo for quite a while.

Apple eating into portable Nintendo sales?

When Max Batch wants to play a video game, he turns to his Apple Inc. iPhone.

The 22-year-old German has shunned hand-held consoles such as Sony Corp.’s PSP and Nintendo Co.’s DS, joining a growing number of people who use their smartphones for online and other games, eroding sales of the dedicated handsets.

Wii sales fading. Is this the end everyone was predicting in 2007?

“The Wii realized its lowest month since launch in hardware unit sales,” market researcher NPD announced today, and the console was beat for the third consecutive time by Xbox 360. Total U.S. bragging rights were as follows:

Xbox 360, 356.7kNintendo DS, 342.7kWii, 244.3kPlayStation 3, 226.0kPSP, 79.4k

That said, think Wii sales will ever pick back up? More importantly, will three straight months of second place finishes to an even older console cause Nintendo to accelerate the release of their next console?

Maybe there just wasn’t any appealing games this past few months? And Mario Galaxy and Metroid Other M, don’t drive console sales?

Year over year consoles and game sales have declined, and analysts pretend it’s online multiplayer’s fault, which is retarded.

New Super Mario Bros Wii drove sales up, maybe Nintendo needs to research why people love that game.

Mark says...

“That said, think Wii sales will ever pick back up?”

Yes. Once some more big Wii games start coming out the sales of the console will begin picking back up. Over the next few months the Wii’s sales should surge with all the great games coming out this fall. The only reason sales have been down is because Nintendo did a poor job of spacing the major releases for the console across the year. Its been 3 months since we got a major Wii game (SMG2), and its been 3 months since the Wii beat the 360.

I also find it funny that this is the Wii’s worst month since launch and yet it still beat the PS3 this month.

25 years and still no great Goonies game

Forget Lara Croft. Forget Indiana Jones. You want an adventure game that’ll sell millions? The Goonies. Seriously. Love it or hate it, that Spielberg/Donner film has gained popularity like no other 80’s film except maybe Ferris Bueller (and Bueller would make a lousy game). Despite The Goonies’ many, many

Limited-edition Metroid shirt available today

With the release of the controversial Other M, Nintendo has given Metroid fans a closer and more intimate look into the eyes of their alien-hunting heroine than ever before.

Well, the closest look they’ve had for another 20 minutes, anyway.

Beginning at 12:00 am CDT on Sept. 11, RIPT Apparel will offer a limited-edition t-shirt inspired by Metroid’s leading lady. Entitled “SAMUS,” the t-shirt was designed by Jonah Block and features a close image of the eyes behind the bounty hunter’s iconic visor.

The orange t-shirt will cost $10 and only be available for 24 hours. After that time, the remaining supply will explode and all RIPT employees will have to escape their lair.

Epic Mickey should have been a 2D platformer

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 12:08pm by Jack

Truth be told, I’m still pretty psyched about Epic Mickey. But if I continue to tell the truth, as I will do so now, I have to say that I was disappointed when the 2D vibes in initial artwork faded away at E3, to be replaced with a 2D/3D hybrid.

Will the game still rock? I’m optimistic, and must say yes, I think it will still melt our faces like some kind of whimsical paint thinner, but the inclusion of a Super Mario Galaxy 3D play style is yet another example of the troubling—and indefinitely continuing—trend with developers that says a 3D game is somehow superior to a 2D one by default.

The silver lining is that games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii/DS, Donkey Kong Country Returns and the new Wii Kirby title all show there’s going to be serious A-list developer support for 2D titles in the very near future, at least from Nintendo anyway. Incredible sales and critical acclaim say that quality 2D games will sell in this day and age, which makes Mickey’s waffling commitment to the genre all the more sad.

Now, do I wish all future games were 2D, because they are somehow hands-down superior to 3D titles? Obviously not, and you’d be ignorant or disingenuous with your comment if you were to say that’s what I mean.

So, when Kotaku’s Brian Crecente says, “I really wish Disney Epic Mickey was just a platformer,” in his post today about new 2D platforming Epic Mickey footage on YouTube, I can only say this: Me too.

The 2D gameplay is far superior to 3D gameplay, at least what I played at E3 this year.

Josh says...
August 25th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

The 3D gameplay looks more interesting to me, sorry. I do like that there is both in the game though.

Paul says...
August 25th, 2010 at 2:18 pm

I MUCH prefer 2d platforming, but I think they’ll still be able to make the 3d stuff interesting. I don’t know if the inclusion of 3d gameplay in the game is enough evidence to allow you to claim that the devs are saying that 3d>2d, but the fact remains that we haven’t fully explored 2d or 3d gameplay yet, however 2d definitely has had more time to grow up. I’m still waiting for the pinnacle of 3d. I believe 2d peaked with Super Mario World, while 3d still suffers from camera and control issues that may or may not ever get ironed out. Perhaps actual 3D (like the 3DS) is what’s needed to solve some of those issues.

And now I’ve gone way far off into left field.
