New 3DS AR details reveal mystery behind Nintendo character cards, info about new games

February 19th, 2011 Posted in 3DS, News, Posted by Valay

A couple of days ago, we were finally able to get a look at the final lineup of Augmented Reality cards for the 3DS. Interestingly, it seemed as though Nintendo characters would be involved with the AR functionality. We now have details about how those cards work, as well as information about new AR games. Check out the details below.

- Use the “?” card to launch the program in AR Games

Anyone else excited for Mario Kart 3DS?

No release date yet. But listen to what the game’s Wikidpedia profile has to say:

Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the new sense of depth makes it clear where all the objects are. Gamespot, IGN and Computer and Video Games have commented on the game’s good use of 3D in the game, stating that it helps with judging distance, “heightening that sense of falling”, and giving more depth to viewing items and their effects, such as the “ink blot”. All three sites also praised the games frame rate and graphics in general, especially the fact that it ran at 60 frames per second. A new feature is how characters interact with each other while driving. Characters not only turn their heads when another racer is nearby, but make faces as well, such as “glaring”. The game was the number one most wanted 3DS game by IGN, and in a poll conducted by Official Nintendo Magazine.

You know… This is really the first mario kart I’m not sure about getting… The ds one really doesnt seem to lack much, yet I rarely ever play it. Sad since I’ve been a fan since the snes days.

Of course I’m excited. This may be the only reason for me to get a 3DS. OK maybe not, if they come out with some other neat games.

Yeah, I’m excited about this game. Pity we don’t know anything about many of the tracks, characters, items, music or various other features though.

Not at the moment, but when I see it in person I might change my mind.

Absolutely! I’d call Mario Kart DS the best of the series so far, and I can’t wait to get this one! Heck, I can’t wait to just SEE it in action in 3D!

I just hope it isn’t like Mario Kart Wii. That was such a disappointing game. The box-art says it all: barely any content and frustrating motion controls.

Sounds very interesting. I really enjoy the Mario Kart games, so I’ll be looking forward to trying this one out. Heck, I’m just excited to try ANY 3DS game!

i also consider mario kart ds the best in the series so heck yeah i am excited for this but not more so than an actual super mario game for 3ds

So wait, they actually got to try the game already. That’s no fair.

The only Mario Kart game I’ve truly enjoyed was on the 64. Ever since, I’ve felt the game turned into an item fest with broken balance were it’s just frustrating to play. As long as the game is fun with focus on driving and not on items, then I’d be glad to play this.

Alvarou says...

Agree with Artefacto…
That focus on ítems and the “snaking” trick on DS ruined the series to me

Which had the better fifth year: Wii or GameCube?

The Wii is in its fifth year of life. After a strong fourth year, things have slowed a bit lately, thanks in part to the usually slow winter months. That said, how would you compare Wii’s fifth year to the GameCube’s fifth year (2006)? Although still early, I’d say it’ll end up being much better. You?

I think I’ll still prefer the gamecube generation in the end, but the Wii’s had a particularly strong 2010, but I think 2011 might be the end, apart from skyward sword (which I’m freakin’ pumped for), the release schedule looks kinda meh, it’s clear a Wii2 announcement is on the horizon. But I think the Wii will have a better ‘final year’ than the gamecube overall.

Josh says...
February 16th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

The Wii had better have a better year, considering there is no successor to the Wii in sight…

Caleb says...
February 16th, 2011 at 5:22 pm

All I remember from the Gamecube in 2006 was Twilight Princess, which ended up being ported to Wii. It was on it’s last legs. The Wii is definitely set to have a stronger 5th year than the Gamecube.

I’m going to call that Skyward Sword will be delayed. Not only that, it will also be a launch title on the Wii2. Anyone seeing the pattern here? >.> lol No but seriously if they do that, I will cry.

Uh oh. Last Story sales are slumping abroad

So if you haven’t heard, Mistwalker’s newest game The Last Story is out in Japan.  The sales numbers show that the game had a great first week, where it sold 118,953 units and was #1 on the Japanese sales charts. Week two for The Last Story wasn’t so great with sale dropping 99K and coming in at #7.  What does this mean to us English speakin’ folks who really, really really want to play this game?

Well we still don’t know if this game is coming to North American or European territories, and that should make you cry.  That’s what it does for me anyhow…or maybe that was the salsa.  In any case, if the sales don’t meet the expectations of Mistwalker, they may very well decide to cancel any translation of the game and keep it a Japanese exclusive forever. What does that mean to you? Well the sales drop should worry anyone outside of Japan, or people who own good Japanese translators.

Should all Wii owners care about this startling revelation? Well but of course! Not having to wade through countless battle menus is enough for me to put it on top of my must have list.  If you haven’t seen any gameplay yet check out this video and see how unFinal Fantasy this game realy is.

Now where did I put my online petition?

I would be a little angry that I still don’t have a great RPG for the Wii yet. I haven’t found a good one just yet. And I’m a fan of Mistwalkers two other games, Lost Odyssey (so close to finishing but I haven’t…) and Blue Dragon (again, almost done but haven’t finished).

I think that their best bet might be to get Square Enix to publish the game stateside, or Atlus.

If you are looking for an RPG to feed your RPG starved wii look too Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Not a 10 necessarily but still good.

From everything that I have read about the Japanese game industry is that their home console market is drying up in favor of handhelds. This is why both Nintendo and Sony have adopted home console level graphics for both of their handhelds. Their home front market is shifting towards gaming on the go. Therefore a game such as Last Story, even with high production values, may not sell as well on home console the way they did ten years ago. It seems to me that if Nintendo ported this to the 3DS then it might pick up in sales, but I do not see it selling well on a home consoles, or atleast in Japan.

As for the poster Lance who said that Atlus or SquareEnix should localize this game for the west, keep in mind that Nintendo is the publisher of this title and like with Tecmo’s Fatal Frame 4, if there are any issues in Japan with the title then the west will not get the game. However, I seem to hold out on the belief that the production of this game and the fact that Nintendo does not have that many titles for the Wii for the other markets that it will eventually find its way into America. Just wait for this year’s E3 to know for sure.

There is a good possibility that Xenoblade will make it to the west, and Nintendo themselves have indicated that games that they have released in other markets might make it to America to fill in the gaps of 2011.

Well, let’s all start calling Nintendo and sending them e-mails asking them politely to bring The Last Story over to the states. The expansive voice acting might give Nintendo of America a pause, but if the idea of hiring actors to replace the Japanese voices is too cumbersome, then they could keep the Japanese voices and just add subtitles.

This list is terrible, Samus is in every way superior to Soap, Crash, Nico, and Lara especially.

She’s tough as nails, has the coolest powersuit in the history of powersuits (although the new Deus Ex might give her a run for her money), destroys space predators, and has appeared in more great games of varying and fun playstyles.

Battlesuit Mario goes to war

A rebranding kinda sorta worked for The Big Mouse in Disney’s Epic Mickey, but would it work for Mario? This, dear readers, is the question I ponder today as I look over this impressive Mecha Mario battle suit artwork over at Cool Vibe this morning.

An even closer look at artist Marat Ars’s new suit design—and new look—is available in that second link. Clicky clicky!

What now you’re IN FAVOR of hardcore gritty reboots? Why would you want to change Mario from classic 2-D Sidescrolling to some kind of robot-shooting game?

Mario is fine how he is. At least that’s what the sales indicate. Right after you ask Miyamoto to make a 2-D Mario game just for nostalgia’s and sales sake, then you float some kind of idiotic reboot with robots? Are you insane?

CM30 says...
February 17th, 2011 at 9:18 am

Mario’s fine as he is. Not saying the art isn’t cool, it does look awesome, but it’s just not needed. Mickey needed the rebranding to get his image back, Mario really doesn’t and has about 15 million copies of New Super Mario Bros Wii sold to prove it.

so i hate mecha!!
but a revamp for older audiences for many titles in movie form or game form may be appeciated…
Take for example the video on youtube of Mario&Luigi as people from a GTA game. Explosives and story line whilst keeping the same named characters.
Another example of an action revamp may be pokemon. Touch upon the dark side of things. Ash would grow up and be a bad ass whilst still keeping his caring nature at times. Pokemon battling it out with fire, explosions, high speed arial action. Blood spraying on the screen. Showing depth and what may happen in reality.

Little games in this format may target a niche market of older gamers who are open to a little action in their old favs.
