Atlus: A Mini Etrian Odyssey Update Video

Quests are awesome, aren’t they? They give you purpose, they reward you, and in RPGs, they’re often the heart of things. You know what’s just as good as a quest, maybe even a bit better? A side quest, that’s what. A side quest gives you choices. It lets you take a break from a game’s main story. It lets you further explore a world you’re really enjoying.

What are your feelings on quests and side quest management in games, Infendo?

Final Fantasy Tactics drives me crazy. I’ve still never managed to get all 300 due to missing quest items and whatnot. I definitely plan on picking up Etrian Odyssey III though.

Video games seek immunity from used sales, fail to see the irony

Used video games have been around since the early ’80s. But they weren’t a problem in the eyes of developers until the middle of the decade, at which point game sales weren’t growing as fast as they used to.

Rather than blame the safe creative bets, bloated budgets, and $10 HD surcharge (yes, many games carry an MSRP of $60 these days) for the decline, developers set their sights on used game sales.

Remember how hard F-Zero GX was?

Anyone complaining about the lack of difficult games recently obviously missed this discouraging hard GameCube game. After 15 attempts, I don’t think I ever made it past the second track. I haven’t picked it up since.

This was an awesome game. Sure, it took some time to get in the groove, but once you hit the zone, it was ridiculously fun. I agree though, tough, and not one you could just sit and play for 20 minutes at a time if you want to get anywhere.

The game is amazing… as long as you don’t play the story mode. It made me want to throw my Gamecube out the window.

I had a hard time to get used to the control scheme. But once you master it, the game is much fun. I finished it once, IIRC, but never finished the Story mode (which is damn hard).

I don’t know if it is a Hoax, but it is said that you can unlock all racers and tracks of the AX version (the arcade counterpart of the GX) if you beat the game. It would be nice, though.

Best!

I couldn’t finish story mode. That one stage where both Blood Falcon and Black Bull have to be beat. Ugh. I must have played that over fifty times…

Kawazu working on an unannounced RPG

August 28th, 2010 Posted in General Nintendo, News, Written by Valay

Akitoshi Kawazu, the producer of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, is working on an unannounced RPG. The news comes from issue 258 of Nintendo Power, though the magazine didn’t have any additional information to share. There is only small note that states his next game “remains a secret for now, but you can bet it won’t play things safe.”

Even though we’re hearing about this through a Nintendo publication, it doesn’t necessarily mean the project will end up on a Nintendo platform. Still, one would think that it’s likely that Kawazu will work on the Wii again, or possibly the 3DS in the future.

Scott Pilgrim Tanking at the Box Offices

The first “true” video game movie isn’t doing to well at the box offices, according to sales data. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World only managed to pull in a measly 10 million over opening weekend; which isn’t exactly cutting it for the movie with a 60 million budget.

Strangely enough, if you guys didn’t already know this, this is one of the few movies that Miyamoto has given the thumbs up too. The director of the movie gave him a special screening at E3 2010 so that he could approve some “Nintendo” elements in the movie. So if Miyamoto’s approval isn’t enough… I don’t know what is. It’ll be sad if this movie tanks, which is unfair considering it’s a pretty good movie.

Pointless button actions that fail to enhance my enjoyment

In researching the best Zelda clone games for a story I’m working on, I recently played Darksiders for PS3, Xbox 360, and (coming soon) to PC. It’s an okay game with awesome production values, and it’s very reminiscent of Zelda.

That said, it’s one of many modern games that feel the need to artificially inflate the number of buttons used, as if they add any real value to the experience. For example, combat in Darksiders is pure hack and slash. So you’d think you can button mash your way to victory. But no, the developer requires that you press a secondary attack button to finish off your enemies.

It may not sound like a big deal. And other games require secondary or tertieary buttons for strategic purposes. But in this case it doesnt work. It feels forced. Pointless. Letting me cycle through X number of primary buttons presses would have been more enjoyable, since this combat is neither strategic nor puzzling.

My rant aside, what other games make poor use of button actions?

Okay, we get it! She feels bad about that baby metroid. From the previews and cutscenes Nintendo has shown us, the game seems to be really keen on shoving this fact down our throats. Also, yeah you’re right. The Prime trilogy should have been in there before Metroid II. Except, I guess it doesn’t have much relevance to story of Other M so they left it out. That was less about metroids and more about phazon.

What made GoldenEye 007 so good?

Was it the controls? The first of its kind on consoles? Something else?

Whatever it was, I’m not so sure developer Eurocom will be able to revive the series on Wii, especially after reviewing their unimpressive portfolio.

I suppose they could surprise us. After all, they did make Dead Space: Extraction. And a lot of people seemed to like that game. (I thought it was meh.) But overall the revamp feels more like a cash-in than any genuine attempt at reviving a classic.

Whatever the case, Activision will release GoldenEye 007 on November 2, exclusively for Wii. With four-person split-screen and eight-person online, is this a day one purchase? Wait and see? Or a pass?

X-Com creator making 3DS game, will be a launch title

August 14th, 2010 Posted in 3DS, News, Written by Valay

Seemingly out of nowhere, X-Com creator Julian Gollop revealed today that he is working on a title for Nintendo’s upcoming handheld. The project is most likely far into development, as its release will coincide with the 3DS’ launch. Gollop wouldn’t share much information about the project, though he did mention that it will be a turn-based tactical RPG. You can read his full comments below.

“Publishers run a mile from anything with turn-based mechanics – it is regarded as too niche. RTS games pretty much killed off turn-based strategy games in the mid-90s – but now even RTS games are regarded as niche. So all my experience working turn-based games from 1983-1997 is now somewhat obsolete, despite the success of X-Com. However, I am now working on a turn-based tactical RPG which will be a 3DS launch title. Thanks to ‘Advance Wars’, ‘Fire Emblem’ and ‘Final Fantasy Tactics’ it seems turn-based games are not totally dead – at least for Nintendo handhelds. I would also argue that Pokemon has a lot of parallels with X-Com in its game system, despite being classified as an ‘RPG’. The core of Pokemon is a turn-based tactical battle enriched by a sophisticated higher level meta-game that allows players to experiment with many game elements and combinations of forces – and Pokemon is the second most successful game franchise in the world. If done right, would an X-Com game with a turn-based combat system be successful? Absolutely!”
